Day 1, January 1, 2021

This is a cliché. Everyone starts everything on the first day of the year. So what? What if you’ve decided to write? What if you decided to write each day? What if you’ve decided to write, each day, no matter what? What if you decided to write, each day, no matter what, and post it for other people to read? What if you decided to write, each day, no matter what, posting it for other people to read, and you didn’t have anything that you wanted to say?

What are you worried about? Are you worried that you’ll just write a bunch of crap and eventually give it up? You might. Are you worried that no one will read it? That’s highly likely. Are you worried that your writing will seem navel-gazing and useless? It probably will. Are you worried that you might have something worth saying, and someone might not like it? That could happen, too.

These are the sort of worries I have at least. The irony of them is that most of them have no bad outcomes. If you try something and give it up, maybe it wasn’t for you. But what if you don’t? What if you build a new habit? If you write something and no one reads it, that might feel bad, but are you writing for attention, or is there more to gain? And so what if you come off as navel gazing once in a while. First of all, have you seen everyone else? I mean, maybe not everyone else but a lot of this world is staring more at themselves in the zoom call than at the people they’re talking to. And besides, aren’t you worth it? Shouldn’t you care about yourself enough to enjoy a deep dive into you for a few minutes each day?

So that leaves the last worry. What if you write something, and someone doesn’t like it? Honestly, give it to me! Give me that all day. That could happen because you’re a terrible writer, but if you’re writing every day, you’re going to be better. But it could also happen because you’ve made someone upset because you said something they don’t agree with. As long as you’re putting your thoughts and ideas out there honestly, you’re either taking a stand, or you’re giving yourself a chance to realize where your thinking didn’t work so well. And sure, you could share something so incendiary that someone doxxes you and blows up your house, but that’s not as likely.

So here I am, writing each day, and sharing it each day, and for what? I do not know, but here it comes. A new thought, idea, or analysis of something I love each day. If it’s not for you, then it’s not for you. And if you like it, you can let me know on Twitter. I’m @magicpantsjones. And if you’re inspired to do something too, let me know, because it’ll make me feel good, and I’ll be proud of you. Well, unless your something is mean or cruel. But that’s not you, is it? You wouldn’t have spent all this time reading if it was.

I teach kids, snuggle with cats (mine) and dogs (when I can). I eat plants, draw pictures, ride bikes, and I like to read and write. @MagicPantsJones on social.
